Hope springs eternal: Another approval hurdle ticked off for New Acland
New Hope’s long-running battle with the Queensland bureaucracy is coming to an end after it won environmental approval for its New Acland coal mine expansion.
New Hope has to lure back up to 400 workers
First proposed more than a decade ago, the $900 million expansion has been bogged down by court appeals from landowners and activitists, but it cleared the courts last year and in May was given approval from the Queensland Co-ordinator General.
That led to approval yesterday from the Department of Environment and Science for an environmental authority.
It still needs a mining lease and from the Minister for Resources and an associated water licence from the Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water.
“New Hope continues to work collaboratively and productively with representatives from the various government departments to finalise the grant of a the mining lease and associated water licence,” the company said.
